Survey Results

RAND has partnered with MGT to provide free online access to Bento for select American Educator and School District Panel surveys. Bento allows users to compare survey results by district characteristics (e.g., size, urban/rural, or socioeconomic status), compare data across years, and export visualizations for reports.

The data is updated after each survey (typically in March for the fall survey and August for the spring survey). Here’s a snapshot from the tool looking at survey data from spring 2026:

- 0 to 9 percent of students have missed 32%
- 10 to 19 percent: 41%

- 30 to 39 percent: 4%
- 40 to 70 percent: 2%
Rural:
- 0 to 9 percent of students have missed 37%
- 10 to 19 percent: 41%
- 20 to 29 percent: 17%
- 30 to 39 percent: 3%
- 40 to 70 percent: 2%
Urban:
- 0 to 9 percent of students have missed 5%
- 10 to 19 percent: 24%
- 20 to 29 percent: 44%
- 30 to 39 percent: 21%
- 40 to 70 percent: 6%

Overall, rural respondents report lower levels of chronic absenteeism than urban respondents.
